More D These notes and footnotes excluding those in tables and figures shall not be considered as requirements of the test method. Agencies that meet the criteria of Specification D are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing, sampling, inspection, etc. Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance with Specification D alone does not completely ensure reliable results.

Thickness or Height of Compacted Bituminous Paving Mixture Specimens1 This standard is issued under the fixed designation D ; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. A superscript epsilon e indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. Scope NOTE 2—In addition to direct measurement, the thickness of test specimens may be determined as described in 6.
It is the a manner that it is capable of measuring specimen thicknesses responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro- in accordance with this procedure. Referenced Documents 4. The results of these tests will be used to find the unit weight of each compacted asphalt mixture, and can also be used with ASTM D to determine the percent of air voids in an asphalt core. Those values will then be used to determine the relative degree of compaction of the asphalt. This helps the client know how effective their equipment is at compacting the asphalt, and whether or not the road is dense enough to pass the requirements of the specifications. If asphalt is not compacted enough in certain parts of the road, potholes can appear, so having well-compacted asphalt is important for keeping roads in good shape. Both tests have been combined into one procedure to get the more accurate volumetric thickness, accounting for irregularities in shape from one side to the other, instead of measuring several sides and averaging those measurements.
